FreeGlobes (English version via Google) is a free PHP/mySQL links manager/directory/digg-like social bookmarking and voting script.

Current latest version: RC2

Official Demo

Its homepage, parts of the script and installation instructions in their wiki are in French and hence I thought a English version of its installation tutorial would be helpful.

  1. Download FreeGlobes from here. Extract the contents and upload to where you want to install via FTP. If your host provides shell access, you could simply wget http://www.freeglobes.net/freeglobes.zip followed by unzip freeglobes.zip.
  2. CHMOD 777:
    conf
    conf/config.php
    .htaccess
    templates_c/
    cache/
    plugins
    prcache/
    share/
    themes/
    thumbs/
  3. Visit yoursite.com/install where yoursite.com is the URL of your FreeGlobes installation.
  4. Set the dropdown to english and hit Go.

    1
  5. Click Next.
    2
  6. Enter your MySQL host name, user name, password and database name.
    3
  7. Click Creating the first Administrator.
    4
  8. Enter desired admin username, password and e-mail address and click Creating the first Administrator.
    5
  9. Click Next.
    6
  10. Click Next.
    7
  11. Click Administration Panel.
    8
  12. Done. Administration link is at yoursite.com/admin. If you see that language is not set to english, set it to english in conf/config.php.
    $CONFIG['language']	=	"english";

  13. Delete install directory from your site. CHMOD 755 conf directory.

The script is still in its initial stages and lacks some important features like notification to admin upon new sites submission, but nevertheless is usable.

If you have questions/suggestions, post up a comment here or head over to FreeGlobes forum.

If you would rather me install FreeGlobes for you, that can be done as well (for a nominal fees). Use the contact form.

We hope you found this how-to helpful. Please social bookmark this tutorial and help us and others. Thanks in advance.

  1. Hello,
I have instaled freeglobes numerous times on my server but each time I have the same problems. Once the script is up and running and the database populated, if I try to “search” I get errors. As I have said, I installed and uninstalled a few times, but cannot overcome this.
I cannot find any English suport for this.
I have tried many other directory scripts, and every one of them gave me multiple errors in the php coding, freeglobes gave me the least.

    HELP if you can?

    Thanks
    Barry
