Register.com has been offering free domain name registrations for quite some time. Note that the domain is free only for the first year. Before the end of first year, you have to transfer it to GoDaddy or such cheaper registrar since register.com is about 5 times more expensive. If you forget or ignore to transfer after the first year, you will be charged around $35 (per year). Below are some points to note:

• You have to provide your credit card info or paypal details during the registration process. Nothing will be charged though.
• You can only register one free domain per sign-up. The system does allow you to register multiple domain names (after you clear browser cache/cookies), but register.com will soon cancel all but one.
